I recently read an article by Sean Poulter of the Daily Mail about kitchens doubling up as offices.

It was interesting to read how this one room in your home is becoming multi-functional. The problem is, as Sean pointed out, kids are staying at home longer, elderly parents are moving in, and the modern kitchen has become the focal point for the household. Research by Wickes found there were now two cooks in 43 per cent of the kitchens, and in 10 per cent of the homes the room was packed with six people at peak times.

Although companies are looking at getting their workforce back into the office, the stark reality is that many companies are quite happy to have people work from home. But, and this is a big BUT: Working in an environment that is busy, noisy, and distracting is not a long-term option. People need to have a demarcation between the stresses of home and work life. They need a place to switch on and off from work, and the kitchen is not the right room for this.

Creating a space to work in your house can be problematic. However, if you have an area in your garden where you can build a Garden Office, life becomes that little bit easier. To be comfortable, we would recommend a space with a gross internal area (GIA) of 3m x 2m. You also need to consider the construction of the garden building. Do you go for a cheap modified shed with minimal insulation? These types of buildings are cheap to buy but not to heat, especially with the cost of energy at present. Take a look at our article A Garden Room for all seasons.

Cheaper buildings need lots more maintenance and will always be seen as just a posh shed, not adding to the value of your property. The alternative is built to last, a well-insulated, aesthetically pleasing garden room that adds to the value of your property. More importantly, the Garden Room should be comfortable to use all year round.
